How every Beligator score is made

We score every eligible asset in a class, rank each one against its peers, and publish the factors, the weights and the results. Nothing here is secret, and nothing is for sale.

Score everything first

Thousands of stocks, ETFs, funds and crypto assets are scored on every update. The Top 10, 20, 50 or 100 is just how many you choose to see.

Rank against true peers

A stock is compared with stocks and a fund with funds. A score of 75 means “strong for its board,” not “safe” or “guaranteed.”

Show the work

Every score comes with a plain-English reason and a factor breakdown, and every month’s results go on the public track record.

From raw data to a score, in seven steps

  1. 1

    Gather the data

Prices, fundamentals, fund reports, on-chain activity, SEC filings and news, for every symbol our providers cover.

  2. 2

    Check eligibility

Assets that can’t be scored reliably are marked “Not rated” with the reason. They stay searchable.

  3. 3

    Calculate each factor

Things like 12-month return, volatility, fees, return on equity or network activity, depending on the board.

  4. 4

    Rank against peers

Each factor becomes a 0–100 score relative to the rest of the board, so one extreme number can’t dominate.

  5. 5

    Weight and combine

Factors are combined into one composite score using the published weights below.

  6. 6

    Smooth and flag

Scores move gradually so one noisy day can’t flip them. Assets with under 3 years of history are marked provisional.

  7. 7

    Backtest and version

Any change to the model is tested on 10+ years of history first, gets a new version number and is listed in the changelog.

What the numbers mean

0–44 · Weak

Lags most of its board on the factors that matter for it.

45–59 · Neutral

Middle of the pack, with strengths and weaknesses that roughly cancel out.

60–74 · Favorable

Stronger than most of its board, usually on several factors at once.

75–100 · Top rated

Among the strongest on its board right now. Still not a guarantee.

Factors and weights, by board

Each board uses the factors that matter for that kind of asset. Fees matter for funds; network use matters for crypto.

Who gets a score

An asset is rated only if we can score it reliably. Otherwise it shows as “Not rated” with the reason.

  • Stocks: at least $1M traded a day, price of $1 or more, not halted or being delisted.
  • ETFs: at least $10M in assets and $250k traded a day, not closing.
  • Mutual funds: at least $25M in assets and 1 year of reported returns, open and not merging.
  • Crypto: at least $250k traded a day on major exchanges, no wash-trading or security-audit flags.
  • Provisional: under 3 years of history. The score is shown, labeled, and pulled slightly toward neutral.

What a score is not

  • Not a buy or sell instruction. It’s a research signal to help you decide what to look at.
  • Not personal. It doesn’t know your goals, timeline or tax situation.
  • Not comparable across boards. To weigh a stock against a crypto asset, compare returns, risk and cost instead.
  • Not influenced by partners. Referral relationships never change a score or a ranking.
